Submission: Grocery Sector Covenants

Read our submission that was presented to the Economic Development, Science and Innovation Committee on 3 June 2022.

We said the dairy, petro-convenience and banner convenience sector is the third player in New Zealand's grocery retail market.

We recommended that Parliament hold a specific inquiry into the market dominance by designated grocery retailers of supermarket distribution and warehousing as well as vertical and horizontal integration by them.

Made suggestions to improve the Bill to better protect suppliers that woud enable them to directly supply dairies. This includes banning supermarkets charging facilitation fees or surcharges to supply goods into the supermarket distribution centres.

Said the Bill should be amended to require that a supplier code of practice be created by the supermarkets.

Stressed enablement of our sector as more price competitive, would help to address climate change while rebuilding our town and district centres by attarcting businesses.
